SEEDS Asia Projects

Project in Myanmar

Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on 2 and 3 May 2008 with winds up to 200 kph, sweeping through the Ayeyarwardy delta region and the country's main city and former capital, Yangon. Trough this experience, it is found that Myanmar has high risk of Cyclone, Earthquake and Tsunami and Storm Surge. Cyclone Nargis has pointed out the need of integrated disaster risk reduction measures to be incorporated in the community level in the affected areas as well as other parts of the country.

Learn Disaster Risk Reduction through Come and Touch MKRC&WKRC in Yangon and Ayeyarwardy Divisions in Myanmar (2010)
(supported by Japan Platform)

Concept:
This project is to continue the gains of previous project supported by Church World Service (CWS) that was to launch Mobile Knowledge Resource Centre (MKRC, launched in Nov 2009) and Water Knowledge Resource Centre(WKRC, launched in May 2010). Currently Japan Platform is supporting SEEDS Asia to implement the activities on disaster risk reduction (DRR) to spread through MKRC and WKRC to Yangon and Ayeyarwardy Divisions in Myanmar for the period of July to December 2010.

There are installed exhibitions in the both of MKRC and WKRC such as miniature model, posters, and video for villagers and student to understand easily the mechanism of hazards and safety tips for mitigating the risk of disaster. This mobile educational tool enables us to reach the unreachable where people are facing high risk of disaster due to lack of accessibility mainly because of geographical situation.

Main targeted people of this project are teachers and young engineers who will be key facilitators to promote DRR education in the country, which make easier for other targeted 3,500 of students and villagers to learn DRR program till the end of November, 2010.
