Response to West Japan Torrential Rain [Japan]

After almost a week passed since torrential rain hit a broad area of western Japan. This long weekend is a chance for willful volunteers to engage in restoration work.
Members of SEEDS Asia and their families visited Shinohara dai in Kobe on 14th July and Tamba City on 15th to support such volunteer activities.

Parts of Shinohara dai are still under an evacuation order and they cannot accept volunteers from government agencies. Instead, neighbors are taking initiative in restoration work, which SEEDS Asia assisted in by joining the cleaning activity to remove sediment from houses, and guiding other incoming volunteers.

Tamba City, one of SEEDS Asia’s counterpart, was also affected by inundation and landslides in several parts. As the official volunteer center can support only residential houses as destinations of volunteers, SEEDS Asia joined restoration work for a farmer’s garage through the City Recovery Promotion Division. By making loads of sandbags with university students, it is hoped that no more sediment or mud water will affect the building.
