Third year of safe school initiatives in Myanmar [Myanmar]
Myanmar is exposed to a range of disasters, including cyclones, earthquakes, floods, landslides, and tsunamis. These disasters extract a high economic, social and environmental cost for Myanmar, which is still a developing economy.
SEEDS Asia’s work in Myanmar has focused on disaster preparedness, focusing on education and school safety. Our project in the country, “Enhancing Comprehensive School Safety in Collaboration with Community in Hinthada Township “ now in its third year, is funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Japan. The current phase of Project activities, which commenced on 1 March, will target 13 villages including Wa Boet Chin Boet Village in a flood-prone area in Hinthada Township to ensure their continued education in disaster, and to secure the safety of the residents. Activities will apply the Comprehensive School Safety Framework(ensuring (1) Safe Learning facilities (2) School Disaster Management (3) Risk Reduction and Resilience education), and include capacity building of DRR practitioners, construction of school-cum-shelters, and strengthening the disaster management system.
Concerned with the widespread COVID-19 risks, the project’s initial kick-off workshop was replaced by a smaller meeting with minimum attendees. We hope to recover the momentum of the project’s implementation soon, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
