International Day for DRR and training in Myanmar [Myanmar]

13th October is celebrated worldwide as the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has set this year’s theme of disaster reduction as “It’s all about governance”, calling on the world community to reflect on the impact of policies and institutionalization, and particularly how we can cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 12th and 13th October, SEEDS Asia, in partnership with UNDP in Myanmar, conducted online training sessions for 15 schools located in the coastal area of Labutta township. The sessions focused on forming school disaster management committees, and planning evacuations during tsunamis.
During the training, Prof. Dr. Myo Thant of the University of Yangon, who has supported SEEDS Asia’s Myanmar projects for the past ten years, gave an interesting lecture on the mechanism of earthquakes and possible impact of tsunamis in the Ayeyarwady Delta. By understanding the risks, the participating school teachers were encouraged to actively engage in making their schools and local communities safer.
SEEDS Asia places great emphasis on linking science and practice. It will continue to commit in making people and communities disaster resilient through the building of linkages in Asia.
