Training on the history of Ayeyarwady River and collaborative water management [Myanmar]

Good technical information is key to ensuring that the right decision is taken at the right level by the right stakeholders!

On 16th December, members of the Disaster Management Committee of Wa boet Chin boet village received a lecture by Irrigation Department, which is responsible for river banks and water resource management in Myanmar. Mr. U Phone Khine Zaw, an officer of the Department, discussed the history surrounding the Ayeyarwady River and the citizen-government partnership in flood control and management.

SEEDS Asia also gave an introduction to the “Living with the River” booklet which was developed last year. Its content features the synergy between nature and people since the British colonial period, and how the people have created and protected their lifestyles. Hinthada Township is a flood-prone area and due to these risks, being aware of the efforts made by the locals to protect “the ordinary”, and the history, is key to safer communities.
