Towards Recovery from Typhoon Hagibis [Japan]

From 20th to 21st February, SEEDS Asia revisited Naganuma District in Nagano City which has been affected by Typhoon Hagibis. Discussions were held with the chief of union of local residents organizations and other key persons. Due to the river dike destroyed by the flooding, Naganuma District had been damaged in terms of residences and livelihood. The town is a historical place with 17 temples in just 6 square kilometers’ land area, and has been affected by flooding for more than a few times, which has been passed down over generations (please see photos for examples of “passing down”. The fertile land as a result of being sandwiched by two rivers produces apples since Meiji Era.

Many of residents in the District now are evacuated in temporary houses or other places. With this, community organizations established their “Recovery Planning Committee” and are about to start off their initiative towards disaster recovery. The discussion with the chief of union of local residents revealed strong wishes of residents for positively strengthened future of the community. SEEDS Asia is determined to assist them in building their future, cherishing their rich history and nature, with an emphasis on their children. We greatly appreciate your support too!
