DRR equipment set up at Model Academy [Bangladesh]

SEEDS Asia has started a new project in March 2020 in Dhaka North city, Bangladesh. Through Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (MoFA) Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO scheme, SEEDS Asia works on school-based capacity building in this phase of the project, which was not covered in the previous phase. The objective of the project is to create a new model for disaster education and install basic disaster risk reduction (DRR) infrastructure/equipment at schools as “community disaster response hubs”, and carry out campaigns to raise DRR awareness throughout the city. As a part of the first year of this new approach, a “Model Academy” in Dhaka North city will be the partner school for establishing further disaster education models.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, all educational institutions in Bangladesh have been closed since March 17th. The activities of this project have not been progressing as scheduled as a result, but DRR equipment such as fire extinguishers and an emergency bag were installed at the Model Academy in the presence of head master on 27th August. The purpose is to enable teachers and students of the school to utilize the equipment and to strengthen the disaster response system.
SEEDS Asia and its partners in Bangladesh hope that all educational institutions can safely resume regular classes soon, and things return to normal!
