Hands-on Training on Firefighting and Rescue [Bangladesh]

On 4th December, hands-on training using DRR equipment was conducted at the project-designated Model Academy. Fourteen teachers participated, with lectures from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense, and the equipment supplier. The firefighter spoke about fire risks hidden in our daily life, how to cope with fires, and recent fires, and its causes, in Dhaka. He also demonstrated how to use a fire extinguisher and demonstrated the use of rescue tools such as a bottle jack and a crowbar. The equipment supplier explained how to maintain the DRR equipment. After listening to the lectures, the participants tried out different situations such as setting up a ladder against the school building for rescue or putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher.

Before receiving the training, the teachers were scared and anxious about fire breakouts, and did not know how to respond. However, they become more confident after obtaining knowledge and skill of fire prevention and carrying out actual firefighting exercises through this hands-on training.

The trained teachers will carry out online DRR classes and demonstrations for students from the end of December, based on what they have learned in the training sessions.
