Training on DRR Infrastructure [Bangladesh]

Pillars of Wisdom

Our project in Dhaka, Bangladesh is now in the process of implementing its second pillar on disaster risk reduction infrastructure. This phase follows the first pillar that focused on DRR education, and will continue on to the third pillar on DRR awareness campaign.

A successful DRR programme should have DRR equipment easily accessible during an emergency in schools, and teachers and students have the knowledge and skills to use them. However, many schools in Dhaka often do not have such provisions. Through the project, we have provided partner schools with basic DRR infrastructure and equipment such as rescue and search lights, and rainwater harvesting and firefighting system.

As a part of the current phase, upon the completion of setting up the rainwater harvesting system, SEEDS Asia and Lalmtia Housing Society School and College organized a 2-day training session and handover ceremony on December 7th and 13th in a presence of the local councilor (who is also the head of the schools governing body). The principal, teachers, and school staff participated the training and inspected all the equipment while they learned how to operate and maintain them. For most of the participants, it was the first time for them to receive such training. They not only enjoyed it but also realized the importance of such DRR infrastructure in disaster preparedness.
