Drills taking roots at schools [Philippines]

On 9the March, SEEDS Asia visited Talisay City in Cebu Province to observe the joint earthquake drill by Talisay City Central Elementary School, Talisay City National High School and Talisay City Science High School. This drill was conducted in accordance with the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) for the first quarter of 2023. NSED aims to raise awareness and increase readiness among the public during earthquake events.

The drill was spearheaded by the Talisay City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO), highlighting the collaboration between the schools and these offices during the earthquake drill to ensure safety and preparedness among learners, teachers, and other school personnel. Primary and secondary education learners, guided by their teachers, collectively gather in a vast field in the school compound and learned the “Duck, Cover, and Hold on” position.

SEEDS Asia continues to support and promote school-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programs in the Philippines in collaboration with the Department of Education Regional Office VII. We believe empowering students and teachers with DRR knowledge and skills can contribute towards a safer and more resilient school community.
