Launch of School-Based DRR Training Program Development [Philippines]

From September 17th to 20th, SEEDS Asia and the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office 7 jointly organized activities at the DepEd EcoTech Center in Cebu City. Through the activities, we provided capacity-building activities for School Disaster Risk Reduction Trainers (SDRRT) and started the development of the school-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) training program. These activities spanned four days and were conducted as part of the JICA-funded project “Strengthening and Promoting School-based Disaster Risk Reduction in Central Visayas.”

The activities were split into two main parts. In Part I, SDRRT members reviewed the project and discussed their roles and responsibilities with the School Disaster Risk Reduction – Task Force (SDRR-TF). Additionally, we discussed the Learning Resource Package for the school-based DRR training program.

The Part II was the Contingency Planning Training & Write-shop for the DepEd Regional Office 7 and the Schools Division Office of Canlaon City. Here, SDRRT members served as facilitators, contributing to their capacity-building. This phase allowed SDRRT to gather valuable feedback from the SDRR-TF, enabling them to enhance their facilitation skills.
Our aim is to collaboratively promote localized school-based DRR in Region 7. This effort involves both SDRR-TF, consisting of previous project participants, and SDRRT members hailing from Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. We are excited to develop the mechanism to strengthen DRR at schools in Central Visayas with these actors!
