Project Overview

We sincerely extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by Typhoon Hagibis in 2019.

SEEDS Asia’s first involvement in Naganuma district of Nagano city, was after the Typhoon Hagibis flooded the Chikuma river and caused a dike to burst its banks. SEEDS Asia carried out a post-disaster needs assessment, which confirmed that the district’s newly established Disaster Recovery Planning Committee would need assistance in order to realize the “build back better” approach, particularly with the additional challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic that was starting to affect Japan back then.

In 2020, SEEDS Asia took part in the joint program implemented by JANPIA (Japan Network for Public Interest Activities) and JPF (Japan Platform) to support disaster recovery in areas affected by Typhoons Faxai and Hagibis, through a project where tablet devices and Wi-Fi connections were provided to members of the district Disaster Recovery Planning Committee, and online lectures, where experts shared their experiences and expertise in post-disaster recovery, was conducted for the members. In 2021, in addition to an extension of the 2020 activities, SEEDS Asia’s proposal to JPF for another program was approved to further enhance our support to Naganuma.

We hope to continue our efforts to assist the district to develop and realize their vision of disaster recovery and resilience.
